A method of protecting an underground coaxial cable carrying both AC power and an RF signal between a tap unit and a premises unit, the method comprising the steps of monitoring the AC current flowing through the coaxial cable, monitoring the resistance between the center conductor and outer conductor of the coaxial cable and interrupting the flow of AC power if (a) the AC current exceeds a predetermined value, (b) the AC current falls below a predetermined value or (c) the resistance falls below a predetermined value.
