In one aspect, the invention concerns a method of compacting soil which involves the steps of repeatedly raising a mass (28) above the soil surface and then dropping it to apply impacts to the soil surface. Indications of one or more instantaneous properties of the soil are periodically derived from the impacts on the soil surface. In accordance with these indications, the number of subsequent impacts and/or the energy imparted to the soil at each impact and/or the frequency of the impacts is or are controlled automatically by a controller typically in the form of a PLC in order to achieve in the soil one or more predetermined properties. In another aspect the invention concerns a soil compaction apparatus (10) that includes a drop mass soil compactor having a mass (28) and means (30) for repeatedly linearly raising the mass above the soil surface and then dropping it to apply impacts to the soil surface. The apparatus also has a monitoring means (42) arranged to provide periodic indications of one or more instantaneous properties of the soil; and the abovementioned control means (44). Still further invention concerns a method and apparatus for measuring instantaneous soil properties on a site.
L'invention concerne, selon l'un de ses aspects, un procédé de compactage de terrains consistant à soulever, de façon répétée, une masse (28) au-dessus de la surface du sol pour ensuite la laisser retomber en vue de provoquer un choc à la surface du sol. Des indications relatives à une ou plusieurs propriétés instantanées du sol sont obtenues périodiquement à la suite des chocs à la surface du sol. Conformément à ces indications, le nombre de chocs subséquents et/ou l'énergie impartie au sol à chaque choc et/ou la fréquence des chocs sont contrôlés automatiquement au moyen d'une unité de contrôle, généralement sous la forme d'un PLC, en vue d'obtenir dans le sol une ou plusieurs propriétés prédéterminées. Selon un autre aspect, l'invention concerne un appareil de compactage du sol (10) comprenant un compacteur de sol à masse de chute, présentant une masse (28) et des moyens (30) permettant de soulever linéairement et de façon répétée ladite masse au-dessus de la surface du sol, puis à la laisser tomber de manière à provoquer des chocs à la surface du sol. L'appareil comprend également des moyens de contrôle (42) agencés pour fournir des indications périodiques d'une ou plusieurs propriétés du sol, ainsi que les moyens de contrôle précités (44). L'invention concerne en outre un procédé et un appareil de mesure des propriétés instantanées du sol dans un site.
