Apparatus for the treatment of dross and scrap provides handling means for handling charges of dross and scrap, drying means for drying the charge before melting, a charging mechanism for conveying a charge to the furnace, and a furnace for melting the charge. The furnace is mounted for rotation and is capable of tilting between a rearward position and a forward position for charging and decanting the furnace, as well as the melting cycle. The opening of the furnace is provided with a door which provides burner means for melting and controls the atmosphere of the furnace while conveying exhaust gases to gas treatment facilities. After melting, the molten metal is removed by a tap hole or decanting to a crucible and conveyed to a holding furnace where it is maintained in molten condition until pouring into moulds.
