The ADVERSE DRUG REACTION EARLY WARNING SYSTEM (DREW) alerts pharmaceutical companies of potentially dangerous side effects before they manifest. DREW uses biomarkers in blood and urine as well as symptoms gathered from patients taking a particular medication. It analyses and interprets this data to detect deviations from normal biological values. If found, deviations are applied to a computerized grid of early warning biomarkers to trace a pattern of developing side effects. The alerted pharmaceutical company can now take preventive action. Thus, DREW is a definite innovation from existing adverse effect surveillance systems which are activated by reported side effects. DREW attempts to prevent the manifestation of full blown side effects before they occur. The system is implemented by a network of participating physicians strategically positioned in areas where the particular medication is used. DREW will make drugs safer for patients and limit liability from adverse effect consequences.
