Methods of treating stroke and conferring protection against cerebral injury in a subject following an ischemic event, wherein a tamoxifen compound is administered in an effective amount so as to confer protection on the population of cells. Treatable ischemic events include cerebrovascular disease or stroke, subarachnoid subhemorrhage, myocardial infarct, surgery and trauma.

L'invention concerne des méthodes permettant de traiter un accident vasculaire cérébral et de protéger un patient contre une lésion cérébrale suite à un événement ischémique, lesquelles méthodes consistent à administrer un composé à base de tamoxifène en quantité suffisante pour permettre la protection de la population de cellules. Les événements ischémiques pouvant être traités comprennent un accident vasculaire cérébral ou une maladie vasculaire cérébrale, une sous-hémorragie sous-arachnoïdienne, un infarctus du myocarde, une chirurgie et un traumatisme.
