A rotary drum dryer (12) has devices for cooling shielding flights (44) located in the combustion zone of the drum. The de- vices comprise cooling flights (46) which ro- tate with the drum to scoop up relatively small amounts of virgin aggregate from ag- gregate accumulated in the lower portion of the drum and to shower this aggregate over the outer radial surface of the shielding flights (44) upon further rotation of the drum, thereby cooling the shielding flights without substantially decreasing the mean tempera- ture of the aggregate. Cooling efficiency is enhanced by the continuous cascading of fresh aggregate over the shielding flights from the cooling flights (46) through a substantial portion of the drum's rotation. The cooling flights and shielding flights preferably coop- erate to limit or even prevent the shower- ing of materials into the burner flame (24) and thus inhibit burner flame quenching and accompanying emissions. Particularly pre- ferred cooling flights take the form of aux- iliary flights which can be easily adapted to existing shielding flight designs.
Un sécheur à tambour rotatif (12) comporte des dispositifs pour refroidir des raclettes de protection (44) placées dans la zone de combustion du tambour. Ces dispositifs comprennent des raclettes de refroidissement (46) qui tournent avec le tambour pour écoper des quantités relativement faibles d'agrégats vierges à partir de l'agrégat accumulé dans la partie inférieure du tambour, et pour projeter ces agrégats sur la surface radiale extérieure des raclettes de protection (44) lors de la rotation du tambour. Ce système assure ainsi le refroidissement des raclettes sans pour autant réduire sensiblement la température moyenne des agrégats. L'efficacité de refroidissement est augmentée par le versement en cascade continu d'agrégats frais sur les raclettes de protection à partir des raclettes de refroidissement (46) par le biais d'une partie importante de la rotation du tambour. Les raclettes de refroidissement et les raclettes de protection coopèrent, de préférence, pour limiter ou même prévenir la projection des matériaux dans la flamme du brûleur (24) et éviter ainsi l'extinction de cette dernière et les émissions associées. En particulier, des raclettes de refroidissement préférées ont la forme de raclettes auxiliaires qui peuvent être facilement adaptées aux raclettes de protection existantes telles qu'elles sont conçues actuellement.
