A B S T R A C T Compositions suitable for the controlled release of biologically active agents such as drugs, nutrients, pesticides, other biocides and fragrances are disclosed. More particularly, there is disclosed a dry direct compression binder formed from hydrophobic carbohydrate polymers and mixtures of hydrophobic carbohydrate polymers with at least one water insoluble or sparingly soluble component composition useful as a dry, directly compressible matrix for the controlled release of various agents, in particular drugs and nutritional supplements, into the gastro-intestinal tract after oral ingestion of said composition, or after implantation. Optionally there is included in the compositions, hydrophobic fumed silica.
