ABSTRACT A dry sprinkler fire extinguishing system including a compressed gas pilot operated water valve between a water supply main and a dry sprinkler pipe, the valve having an input orifice connected to the water supply main, and a flow control disk which sets over the output orifice and is closed and held in a closed condition by water pressure from the water supply main. The compressed gas pilot controls the flow of water from a chamber located above the flow control disk which is connected on its one side by a supply path from the water supply main. When there is a preset minimum gas pressure in the dry sprinkler pipe, the pilot is held closed and blocks water flow out of the chamber, keeping the disk in a closed condition. If the gas pressure in the dry sprinkler pipe drops below the preset minimum limit, the gas pilot opens permitting water to drain from the chamber faster than it can be replenished by the supply path from the water supply main, thereby permitting the flow control disk to open and flood the sprinkler piping. Thus a dry sprinkler system is provided which eliminates the problems traditionally associated with dry sprinkler systems, including slow response times and false alarms due to "water hammer" in the water supply main.
