Abstract A dry test strip, for the detection of analytes in liquids containing red blood cells, typically whole blood, comprises a detection zone containing reactant system that can generate a unique signal in the presence of an analyte wherein RBC in the test fluid are prevented from entering the detection zone by a barrier comprising a polysaccharide material. The unique signal generated by the reagent system in the detection zone is visualized through the carrier strip opposite the barrier layer.
