A cellular radio telecommunications system and method of operating the same is described which includes a first cellular radio telecommunications network for providing frequency division duplex radio transmissions over an air interface to one or more fixed or mobile terminals and a second cellular unidirectional radio telecommunications network which at least partly overlaps the first cellular radio telecommunications network for providing unidirectional simplex radio transmissions over an air interface to the one or more fixed or mobile terminals. At least one of access to the unidirectional second cellular network and handover of a communication supported by the unidirectional second cellular network is managed by the first cellular network. A special dedicated uplink channel may be provided in the first network for trasmitting uplink control and/or error messages of the second network.
La présente invention concerne un système cellulaire de télécommunications radio et son procédé de fonctionnement, lequel système comprend un premier réseau cellulaire de télécommunications radio destiné à assurer des transmissions radio duplex à répartition en fréquence sur une interface hertzienne vers un ou plusieurs terminaux fixes ou mobiles d'un second réseau cellulaire de télécommunications radio unidirectionnel qui chevauche au moins en partie le premier réseau cellulaire de télécommunications radio et qui est destiné à assurer des émissions radio unidirectionnelles simplex sur une interface hertzienne vers le ou les terminaux fixes ou mobiles précités. Le premier réseau cellulaire gère soit l'accès au second réseau cellulaire unidirectionnel, soit le transfert d'une communication prise en charge par le second réseau cellulaire unidirectionnel. Un canal de liaison ascendante spécialisé peut être réservé, dans le premier réseau, à la transmission des messages de commande de liaison ascendante et/ou de messages d'erreur du second réseau.
