A dual-rate surface effect damper(10) with extended useful life. The dual-rate is pro- vided by two cylindrical liners (30, 32, 34, 36) which have different inner diameters which en- gage a damping piston (12) having protrusions (14) which have an interference fit with the liner (30, 34). features which extended life include heat dissipative elements such us internal and external fans (24); a convective MoS2, dispersed in a Teflon (B)filled flurosilicone. Maintaining the temperature of the elastomer (32, 34, 36) below about 200 ° F (93.3 °C) is critical to avoiding thermal breakdown. In addition, the elastomer (32, 34, 36) and metal- lic surfaces (14) can undergo a surface treatment to reduce their tendency to abrade and to cause abrasion, respectively.
