APPLICATION OF CHARLES W. NIES AND DONALD A. EVERT DUAL REEL HUB ABSTRACT A dual reel hub assembly for securely mounting two con- fronting reels coaxially while allowing independent rotational operation thereof has an axially inward hub structure for mount- ing an inner reel and an axially outward hub structure for mount- ing an outer reel. The inward and outward hub structures are mounted on a common central spindle, or shaft, with the inward hub structure being free to rotate on the shaft while the out- ward hub structure is fixedly attached to the shaft and spaced from the inward hub structure. Each hub structure includes a reel support shell having an outer surface for supporting an inner circumferential surface of a circular axial opening in a reel. A plurality of radially outwardly extending key pins are linearly aligned parallel to the shaft axis and are mounted on each reel support surface and are arranged to mate with one of a plurality of longitudinal grooves, or keyways; on the cir- cumferential inner surface of the axial reel opening. A rota- table locking ring on each hub structure is dimensioned to pass through the reel axial opening and has radially outwardly pro- jecting locking fingers equal in number to the longitudinal grooves and dimensioned to pass therethrough. A selective rotation of the locking ring is used to position the locking fingers against a reel face. On the inner hub structure, the locking ring is spring biased toward a radially outwardly projecting circumferential flange located at the opposite end of the hub shell from the locking ring. On the outer hub structure, the locking ring is spring biased toward a rotatable flange segment plate dimensioned to pass through the reel axial opening and having radially outwardly extending flange segments equal in number to the longitudinal grooves and dimen- sioned to pass therethrough. A selective rotation of the seg- ment plate is used to position the flange segments against a reel face. An actuator assembly in the outer hub structure selectively connects the inner and outer hub structures to enable the locking rings and flange plate to be rotated to position the locking fingers and flange segments either aligned with the longitudinal reel grooves or against respective reel faces. - 2 -
