ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A method and apparatus for the generation of power and for increasing the temperature when a working fluid is circulated through a fluid path within two concentric members which may both be rotors. The working fluid is compressed by centrifugal force in an outwardly extending portion of the fluid path and expanded against centrifugal force in an inwardly extending portion of the fluid path. Heat is ex- changed between two streams of the working fluid within the path in a regenerative type heat exchanger, and heat is exchanged with the working fluid in a high temperature heat exchanger located downstream for the working fluid of the heat addition in said regenerative heat exchanger. An additional heat exchanger, at a lower temperature than the high temperature heat exchanger, may be provided to exchange heat with the working fluid downstream for the working fluid of the heat removal in the regenerative heat exchanger. Working fluid may be any suitable gas such as air. The high temperature heat exchanger is usually provided with a heat transfer fluid flowing through the rotor shaft. Work is produced by the device when operated as a turbine, and work is usually required by the device when operated as a heat pump.
