Disclosed is a dual stop valve assembly (30) for use in a cargo tank motor vehicle (10) having a flammable material stowing cargo tank (16) with an external pipe (20d) for dispensing the flammable material. The assembly (30) includes an external pipe connection section (36) for connecting the external pipe (20d) to the cargo tank (16) and has a pair of stop valves (38a, b) spaced apart and operable within the external pipe connection section (36). The assembly (30) also includes an actuator (40) for actuating opening of each of the pair of self-closing stop valves (38a, b) between a flammable material loading/unloading position and a material transport position. The external pipe connection section (36) includes a break area (42) for promoting breakage of the external pipe connection section (36) along the break area (42) such that, upon breakage along the break area (42), only an amount of flammable material that is stowed within the external pipe connection section (36) and between the pair of stop valves (38a, b) is discharged. A method of operating a dual stop valve assembly (30). Advantageously, the present invention provides for improved safety in the transport of flammable liquids by providing an apparatus and method for reducing the amount of flammable liquids released in the event of a breakaway event.

L'invention concerne un ensemble (30) double soupape d'arrêt utilisable dans un véhicule (10) à moteur remorquant une citerne (16) contenant un matériau inflammable dotée d'un tuyau externe (20d) destiné à distribuer ledit matériau inflammable. L'ensemble (30), qui comporte une section (36) de raccordement du tuyau externe destinée à raccorder ledit tuyau externe (20d) à la citerne (16), est également équipé de deux soupapes d'arrêt (38a,b) distantes et fonctionnant à l'intérieur de la section (36) de raccordement du tuyau externe. L'ensemble (30) comporte également un actionneur (40) qui permet d'ouvrir chacune des soupapes d'arrêt (38a,b) à fermeture automatique entre la position de chargement/déchargement de matériau inflammable et la position de transport dudit matériau. La section (36) de raccordement du tuyau externe comporte une zone de rupture (42) qui favorise la rupture de ladite section (36) le long de cette zone de rupture (42) de sorte que, lors de la rupture le long de cette zone de rupture (42), seul la quantité du matériau inflammable contenue dans la section (36) de raccordement du tuyau externe et entre les deux soupapes d'arrêt (38a,b) est évacuée. L'invention concerne également un procédé de fonctionnement de l'ensemble (30) double soupape d'arrêt. L'invention concerne en outre la sécurité améliorée avantageuse du transport de liquides inflammables grâce à un appareil et un procédé qui permettent de réduire la quantité de liquides inflammables déversée en cas de rupture.
