ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A child-resistant closure assembly for an open mouth container having an annular rim on the open end thereof, and circumferentially spaced locking lugs having downwardly open- ing notches, comprises an outer shell including a circular panel section and an annular skirt depending from the peri- phery thereof, the skirt fitting around the annular rim; spaced keys projecting inwardly from the inside annular surface of the skirt and fitting within the notches; and a resilient inner closure having an outside diameter larger than the inside dia- meter defined by the inner surfaces of the keys, whereby the inner closure is removably retained within the outer shell, the inner closure includes an annular plug depending from the central panel portion and having an interference fit within the rim, an annular skirt depending from the periphery of the central panel of the inner closure, and defining with the plug an annular channel snugly receiving the rim, and a handling ring on the inner closure to facilitate removal of the inner closure from the outer shell, the ring being integrally at- tached to the central portion of the inner closure within the circumference of the annular plug.
