A vacuum template (10) has a suction chamber (22) on its back surface that adheres the template (10) to the wall (88) or other flat surface when a source of vacuum pressure (12) attached to the template (10) is turned on and the template (10) has been placed by the worker in its desired position. Dust inlets (62) adjacent a guidance hole (50) in the template (10) immediately suction away dust particles as the hole is being cut by a power tool (14) or hand saw manipulated by the user. Interchangeable modules (152) on the template (10) provide for variations in hole size and shape.
