A dynamic article accumulator conveyer system is provided for installation within a production line conveyer between an article delivering station and an article receiving station, said accumulator comprising at least one pair of parallel generally coplanar conveyer runs, comprising an infeed conveyer section driven in a first direction through a first motor drive system, a parallel discharge conveyer section driven in the opposite direction through a second motor drive system and an article accumulating conveyer portion. The dynamic accumulator further comprises an article transfer carriage comprising i) drive means comprising a third motor drive system for moving said carriage between a proximal end portion and a distal end portion of the parallel conveyer runs, ii) at least one article transfer device comprising a rotary transfer platen driven by a fourth motor drive system to transfer articles from an upstream conveyer run to a downstream adjacent parallel conveyer run. The article accumulating portion may comprise at least one U shape conveyer section driven by a fifth motor drive system and the transfer carriage may further comprise automatically deployable railing
