A new approach to capturing and reproducing either live or recorded three- dimensional sound is described. Called MTB for "Motion-Tracked Binaural", the method employs several microphones (14), a head tracker (18), and special signal-processing procedures to combine the signals picked up by the microphones (14). MTB achieves a high degree of realism by effectively placing the listener's ears in the space where the sounds are occurring, moving the virtual ears in synchrony with the listener's head motions. MTB also provides a universal format for recording spatial sound.

L'invention concerne une nouvelle approche pour acquérir et reproduire un son tridimensionnel émis en direct ou enregistré. Le procédé selon l'invention (appelé MTB) est un procédé binaural à poursuite de mouvement faisant appel à plusieurs microphones (14), à un système de poursuite de tête (18) ainsi qu'à des procédures de traitement de signaux spécifiques pour combiner les signaux captés par les microphones (14). Ledit procédé MTB permet d'atteindre un degré de réalisme élevé, par placement efficace des oreilles de l'écoutant dans l'espace où les sons sont produits, les oreilles virtuelles étant déplacées en synchronisation avec les mouvements de la tête de l'écoutant. Le procédé MTB fournit en outre un format universel pour enregistrer un son spatial.
