2092085 9303531 PCTABS00019 A dynamic braking resistor (10) for stabilizing a power system (12) during power system disturbances includes a braking resistor (25) for coupling with a power system bus (16). A controller (40) monitors a power system parameter, such as the speed of a generator (14) coupled with the power system bus (16), and determines therefrom a thyristor control signal (42). The controller (40) uses the power system parameter to establish a desired modulation (50) and then provides a bias (60) to the desired modulation (50). The controller (40) conditions (66) the biased desired modulation signal (64) to provide the thyristor control signal (42). A thyristor valve (30) responsive to the thyristor control signal (42) couples the braking resistor (28) with a ground potential (32). A method is also provided of damping subsequent oscillations on a power system following a power system disturbance using the dynamic braking resistor (10).
