2135516 9324829 PCTABS00028 A system and method for nondestructively measuring the longitudinal stresses in a rail (7) of a continuous rail track includes an ultrasonic transmitter (3) which transmits coded focused shear pulses (5) through a rail (7) which are subsequently received by a linear array (49) of sensors (47). A displacer (65) adjusts the separation between the transmitter and the sensors to maximize the signal intensity received by a sensor centrally located in the array (47). A data processor (11), in conjunction with a rail height detector (83), a rail temperature detector (91) and a rail splice detector (73), dynamically determines the longitudinal stresses in the rail (7) as a function of the velocity of propagation of the pulses, the stress free temperature (SFT) of the rail (7), and activates a rail marker (97) to mark portions of the rail (7) having unacceptable longitudinal stresses. Stress and related data is recorded on a data log (95). A video camera (99) provides observed rail separation data to the data processor (11).
