ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A method of manufacturing a dynamoelectric machine rotor assembly where the rotor shaft material is not required to be of a large initial diameter to provide for seats shoulders and the like as the shaft material is machined, but where the initial rotor shaft material need be only the size of the shaft extensions. A portion of a shaft of smaller diameter is prestressed by heat shrinking a collar onto that portion of the shaft, a rotor body is assembled onto the shaft, and a second collar is mounted on another part of the shaft by heat shrinking. The resulting rotor assembly has two prestressed portions which stiffen the assembly. The prestressed portions extend from the rotor body to the bearing areas of the shaft.
