ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A method and apparatus for determining condition and homogeneity of the structure of coal seams by which pulsed electromagnetic energy is transmitted into the face of a coal seam, the energy transmitted into the face is received to develop a return signal per transmitted pulse, selected successive return signals are processed to eliminate source coherent interference while increasing the signal to noise ratio and any structural inhomogeneities within the coal seam are indicated visually. Previous attempts have been made to use radar to explore geologic materials, but most of this work has been unsuccessful except when used in salt or extremely dry formations. Thus, reliable indication has been produced only at very short depths of penetration of the signal, in the order of a few feet. The present invention provides a ground probing radar for surveillance of ground formations, and in particular coal seams, which has relatively long effective range and yet has signal processing capability for materially reducing source coherent interference.
