Abstract Echo cancellation for bidirectional digital transmission systems is improved by cancelling the echo tails of a desired number N of digital symbols transmitted on a line in the next preceding N signalling periods. A circuit for this purpose has a portion which effects a summation of the last N transmitted symbols, so as to ease system implementation by an integrated circuit, and a part which computes an estimated sample of the echo-channel pulse-response. The results are multiplied by one another to obtain an estimated echo-signal.
