ABSTRACT An echo-type range finding system includes circuitry for discrimin- ating between time echo signals and spurious signals. The circuitry con- tinuously samples the received signal during sample intervals each far shorter in duration than the anticipated duration of an echo. The sampled portions are summed and if the sum signal increases at a rate greater than a predetermined rate for a time period greater than a predetermined time, a time echo is recognised and appropriate action taken. Otherwise a spurious signal is recognised and the sum signal is returned to an initial value.
