Abstract of the Disclosure An internal combustion engine (10) has an intake manifold (12) including runners (14) connected to the engine at the intake ports (16) thereof for delivering a combustible mixture to the cylinders (20) of the engine. Flow modification members (22) are positioned in the paths of flow to the cylinders (20) and these members are located upstream but in close proximity to the engine intake ports (16). Each flow modification member (22) comprises generally planar faced flow restricting structure (24) arranged effectively to reduce the cross- sectional area of the flow path so that the cross- sectional area at the point in the flow path of most reduced area divided by the displacement of one of the cylinders is 0.03 square inches per cubic inch or less to thereby disrupt the flow of the combustible mixture and increase its velocity just prior to delivery to the intake ports of the engine. Such flow modification provides efficient and more complete combustion of the mixture which results in economy gains up to 20%. Exhaust gas from the engine may be recirculated into the manifold for combining with the air/fuel mixture delivered to the cylinders of the engine to offset the emission of oxides of nitrogen which might otherwise occur.
