ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Hand-held ski sharpeners are well known, but they are difficult to use and tend to produce unsatisfactory results. Electrically operated ski sharpeners are also known in which a rotating grinding wheel is used to apply a cutting pressure to the edge of the ski. This cutting pressure may be adjustable. However, in such sharpeners, the grinding wheel can easily become damaged and worn and therefore needs to be dressed before use. The ski sharpener disclosed herein comprises an abrasive disc (30) which is rotated by a motor (20), the disc being biased to a position where it is proud of a guide surface (9) by means of which the sharpener is guided along the ski. The biasing of the disc (30) is adjustable by means of a set screw (23) and lock nut (24) attached to an axially movable motor spindle (28) against the action of a compression spring (27) or other means applying the desired force. This enables different cutting pressures to be applied and hence different amounts of material to be removed. The disc (30) has an abrasive surface (32) which is pulled on to the edge of the ski as the sharpener is moved along it.
