In preparing a flexographic printing element from a photopolymer printing precursor material the edges of the photopolymer may form unwanted relief ridges if not masked from UV exposure. An edge-masking layer is applied in an automated process in response to data supplied by a controller. The edge-masking layer may be sprayed or applied by an inkjet nozzle or head.
