An EDM wire having an outer coating of gamma phase brass with an overlayer of continuous unalloyed zinc or ductile epsilon phase brass entrapping the gamma phase and a process for manufacturing the EDM wire is provided. A second process for synthesizing a ductile epsilon phase brass coating on the aforementioned and other substrates is also provided. The first process includes coating a copper bearing metallic core with zinc. The zinc coating is then converted to gamma phase brass via a diffusion anneal and subsequently re-coated with zinc prior to being cold drawn to its finish diameter. The process of converting a zinc coating to a ductile epsilon phase brass includes heat treating the wire at a temperature low enough to minimize or eliminate changes in the mechanical properties of the composite wire.
La présente invention a trait à un fil d'électroérosion présentant un revêtement extérieur de laiton de phase gamma avec une couche sus-jacente continue de zinc non allié ou de laiton de phase epsilon ductile renfermant la phase gamma ainsi qu'un procédé pour la fabrication du fil d'électroérosion. L'invention a également trait à un second procédé pour la synthèse d'un revêtement en laiton de phase epsilon sur ledit fil et d'autres substrats. Le premier procédé comprend le revêtement d'une âme métallique contenant du cuivre avec du zinc. Le revêtement de zinc est ensuite converti en laiton de phase gamma par recuit de diffusion et ultérieurement revêtu de nouveau avec du zinc avant d'être soumis à un étirage à froid jusqu'à atteindre son diamètre de finition. Le procédé de conversion d'un revêtement de zinc en laiton de phase epsilon ductile comprend le traitement thermique du fil à une température suffisamment basse pour minimiser ou supprimer des modifications des propriétés mécaniques du fil composite.
