ABSTRACT Effervescent couples, pharmaceutical compositions containing them and a process of preparing said couples by reacting citric acid with an alkali metal carbonate or bicarbonate. The mixture is allowed to react with the evolution of carbon dioxide until citric acid is converted into a mono and di alkali metal citrate, The couples comprise a mixture of the mono and di alkali metal citrate in a weight ratio comprised between 8/1 and 1/10. According to a specific embodiment of the inven- tion these pharmaceutical compositions also contain an antacid for the simultaneous treatment of stomachal hyperacidity and histamine H2-receptor hypersecretion.
