21 49,769 ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A combined cycle system includes a boiler having a fluidized bed which provides heat from burning coal for generating steam used to drive a steam turbine generator. After compressed air has been heated to 1400°F in a fluid bed air heater, it is further heated in combustors of a combustion turbine by combustion of a gas obtained from low temperature pyrolysis of the coal in another fluidized coal bed which is pressurized. The hot gaseous products drive the combustion turbine and a connected generator. Char from the pyrolysis and supplementary coal are burned in the boiler fluid bed with the exhaust of the gas turbine. Sulfur in both the coal or char and the gas turbine exhaust is captured by limestone in the bed. The high heating value of the pyrolysis gas and the high air preheat require a relatively small volume of gas. Corrosive and sticky constituents of coal are not vaporized at the low pyrolysis temperature of 1000°F. The small quantity of gas and the absence of corrosive constituents permit satisfactory operation of the gas turbine with only dust removal from the gas without requiring gas cooling.
