ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A switching power supply comprises a transformer having primary and secondary windings with a control circuit connected to the power transistor for controlling current passing through the primary winding. The power-up circuit includes transistors in a Darlington configuration which charge a capacitor that is connected to the input of a control circuit. The control circuit operates a power transistor to regulate the flow of current through the primary winding. Regulated voltage at the control circuit is reached with the aid of a zener diode which is connected to the input of the Darlington configuration. One of the secondary windings of the transformer is connected to a second capacitor which in turn in connected, through a diode, to the input of the control circuit. As current flows through the secondary, the second capacitor is charged to take over the function of supplying the control voltage to the control circuit. As the second capacitor charges to above the zener voltage of the zener diode, the reverse bias switches the Darlington configuration off thereby eliminating this source of drain from power lines that are connected to the primary winding.
