A more efficient solid-state light emitting device in which phosphors excited by radiation produce visible light. The efficiency is incresed by, for example, providing a reflector adjacent to the phosphor layer for reflecting at least some of the radiation that passes through the phosphor, back into the phosphor. The reflector may also reflect at least some of the visible light that is emitted by the phosphor toward a designated light output. Alternatively, or in addition to, the lateral edges of the active region of the radiation source can be at least partially surrounded by a visible light emitting phosphor and a reflector. This allows more of the radiation to interact, and thus excite, the phosphor material, making the device more efficient. The reflector also may reduce optical and radiation cross talk between adjacent light emitting devices.
Cette invention a trait à un dispositif émetteur de lumière dans lequel les luminophores excités par un rayonnement produisent une lumière dans la gamme du visible. On améliore l'efficacité de ce dispositif en installant, par exemple, un réflecteur au voisinage de la couche de luminophores et ce, pour renvoyer vers les luminophores au moins une partie du rayonnement les traversant. Ce réflecteur peut également réfléchir au moins une partie de la lumière visible émise par les luminophores vers une sortie de lumière désignée. Dans une variante ou, en sus de cet agencement, il est possible d'entourer, au moins partiellement, les bords latéraux de la région active de la source de rayonnement de luminophores émettant de la lumière dans la gamme du visible et d'un réflecteur. Cet agencement permet une meilleure interaction du rayonnement et, partant, excite les luminophores rendant le dispositif plus efficace. Le réflecteur peut également réduire l'intermodulation optique et rayonnante entre dispositifs émetteur de lumière contigus.
