An elastically extendible fastening line is adapted to prevent eye injury upon failure of the fastening line. A pair of hooks are secured to opposite ends of an elastically extendible cable. A flexible, relatively non-elastic sheath surrounds the cable. Opposite ends of the sheath are attached to the hooks. The sheath is longer than the elastomeric cable in its resting state thereby permitting extension of the cable. Once the sheath is fully extended, it prevents extension of the cable beyond its normally expect elastic limit. If the cable does snap while under tension, any resulting movement of cable pieces is confined by the sheath thereby avoiding injury to a worker.
