ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE An electric kettle having an electrical immersion heater and a set of switch contacts. The immersion heater comprises a metal sheathed element permanently mounted on a metal head so as to produce a hot spot on the head and a dry overload responsive actuating mechanism is provided responsive to overheating of the hot spot to open the switch contacts. The dry overload mechanism is disposed between the mounting and the head so that a bimetal device incorporated in the mechanism abuts the hot spot, such bimetal device having a first movable member which extends to a first of the switch contacts. A steam responsive actuating mechanism is also provided and actuates a second movable member which extends to a second of the switch contacts. By providing a respective movable contact for each of the dry overload responsive actuating mechanism and the steam responsive actuating mechanism, each mechanism can b designed or modified without compromise or restriction imposed by the design of the other. Such design also prevents the buildup of cummulative manufacturing tolerances in one actuating mechanism being compounded or affected by the tolerances in the other mechanism and removes the need for two respective switches and the alternative disadvantages and limitions inherent in arranging both actuating mechanisms to operate one movable contact either directly or through the on/off mechanism of a switch.
