An electric motor (10) comprising a shaft (24) to which a stator (20) is fixedly mounted and a rotor (22) is rotatably mounted. The shaft (24) defines a longitudinal axis having opposing ends that are adapted to be fixedly mounted to a structural support. The stator (20) preferably comprises multiple windings (56) capable of reversible current flow so that the winding polarity may be altered. The rotor comprises multiple magnets (74, 260) that are radially spaced about the periphery of the stator. Each of the magnets has at least one predetermined pole. A controller (12) is coupled to the windings and controls the direction of the current flowing through the windings in such a manner to initiate and control the rotation of the rotor about the stator.
