2096831 9210348 PCTABS00013 An electric pulsed power vacuum press assembly (10) is provided for delivering high-power, short-duration electrical pulses to a selected sample (11) which is simultaneously subjected to mechanical compression. A hydraulic press (14) provides mechanical compressive force to a press insert member (12) containing the sample (11). Pulsed electrical power is delivered by a power supply assembly (16) and vacuum by a vacuum assembly (18). The electrical pulsed power is delivered through the sample (11) along an electrical pathway (49) characterized by very low inductance and resistance. The preferred electrical pathway (49) exclusively utilizes parallel plate conductor portions and coaxial line portions. The assembly (10) is adapted to provide very high short duration temperatures and is used for purposes such as synthetic diamond production.
