ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A connector part includes a body surrounding insulating inserts which carry first pin contacts. The connector also carries an electro-optical element operatively coupled to an end of an optical fibre. The electro-optical element has second pin contacts that engage in recesses in the backs of the first pin contacts. Alternatively, the wire leads from the electro-optical element can be inserted directly into a wire receiving barrel in recesses in thebacks of the first pin contacts. The connector part can be coupled to a complementary connector part to form connections to the first pin contacts. The connector part forms an electro-optical signal converter. The electro- optical element can be removed and replaced by another electro-optical element.
