ABSTRACT Disclosed is an electrical connector having a cavity within its body for the accomodation of surge protection means. The body further encloses an electro-luminescent source, as well as reflectors and optical light guides for directing light emitted by the electro-luminescent source to a desired area or portion of the body for subsequent emission therefrom. More particularly is disclosed an electrical connector in which the surge protection means are embodied in a replaceable assembly which is inserted into the body through an aperture. Means are provided such that the electrically conductive members internal to the electrical connector are in frictional engagement with aligning electrically conductive members embodied in the replaceable surge protector assembly. Further, fusible link means are provided within the replaceable surge protector assembly such that a short-circuit failure of the surge protection means or a load induced electrical overload will cause physical rupture of the fusible link. Also provided are optically reflective means in the replaceable surge protector assembly in order to reflect light from the electro-luminescent source within the body onto the reception ends of the optical light guides, thereby providing two light paths. One of the light paths thus provided serves to provide a visible indication external to the connector body of the presence of electrical power when the connector is connected to an appropriate power source, and the other light path serves to provide a visible external indication of the integrity of the fusible link, and therefore the functionality of the surge protection means embodied within the replaceable surge protector assembly.
