Abstract: An electrically heatable element which can be used in gas detection instruments has a coiled metal filament embedded in a bead of porous refractory material containing combustion promoting catalyst and may be made by forming an adherent bead of porous refractory material such as alumina on a coiled metal filament and then applying to the bead in successive deposition steps alternate deposits of combustion promoting catalyst such as platinum, and porous refractory material. The bead may consist of a core of refractory material alone and a relatively thick shell which contains the catalyst. The element has improved resistance to catalyst poisoning and therefore prolonged useful working activity .
