Abstract of the Disclosure A photoengraving plate is taught having a sheet of etchable metal such as magnesium laminated to a self- -supporting base structure in which the layer next adjacent and bonded to the etchable metal sheet is a non-metallic, preferably organic plastic, layer which is substantially inert to the etchant composition to be used in the photoengraving process. Preferably the metal sheet is of minimal thickness corresponding to the maximum intended depth of etch, e.g. 30 mils. An exemplary plate has a magnesium sheet bonded to an ethylene/acrylic acid copolymer layer that is bonded to a poly(ethylene terephthalate) sheet.
