The invention provides an EL device having a structure in which a first electrode 12 formed according to a predetermined pattern, a first insulator layer 13, an electroluminescence-producing light emitting layer 14, a second insulator layer 15 and a second electrode layer 16 are successively stacked on an electrical insulating substrate 11. At least one of the first insulator layer 13 and the second insulator layer 15 contains as a main component barium titanate and as subordinate components magnesium oxide, manganese oxide, yttrium oxide, at least one oxide selected from barium oxide and calcium oxide and silicon oxide. The ratios of magnesium oxide, manganese oxide, yttrium oxide, barium oxide, calcium oxide and silicon oxide with respect to 100 moles of barium titanate are: MgO: 0.1 to 3 moles, MnO: 0.05 to 1.0 mole, Y2O3: 1 mole or less, BaO+CaO: 2 to 12 moles, and SiO2: 2 to 12 moles, as calculated on MgO, MnO, Y2O3, BaO, CaO, SiO2 and BaTiO3 bases, respectively.

L'invention se rapporte à un élément électroluminescent présentant un produit céramique en couches comprenant un substrat, une première couche à effet d'électrode et une première couche isolante, et comportant dans au moins une des couches isolantes une matière diélectrique d'une composition spécifiée constituée principalement, en pourcentage molaire, de 0,1 à 3 % de MgO, de 0,05 à 1,0 % de MnO, jusqu'à 1 % de Y2O3, de 2 à 12 % de BaO + CaO et de 2 à 12 % de SiO2, pour un pourcentage molaire de 100 % de BaTiO3. Ceci permet d'obtenir un élément électroluminescent susceptible de subir une attaque basse tension, peu sujet au claquage diélectrique et capable de délivrer une lumière stable en temps étalé.
