A tactile display apparatus which stimulates the skin using an array of contactors which move laterally in relation to each other in one or two dimensions when driven by actuators arranged in a close packed array. An optional multiplexing technique may be used to reduce the number of activation means. The same apparatus may be applied to convey and position small articles.
