An electro-optic colour device comprises a layer of light modulating material, for example a polymer dispersed liquid crystal layer (7), located between polarisers (8, 9, 10) at least one of which is coloured (9, 10). By activating the device, a voltage is applied across the polymer dispersed liquid crystal cell (PDLC) and the cell is switched from a scattering to a non-scattering state or vice-versa, and by arranging the coloured polariser(s) accordingly, the colour of the light transmitted can be controlled. Suitable applications include membrane switches.

Ce dispositif électro-optique coloré comprend une couche de matériau modulateur de lumière, par exemple une couche de cristaux liquides (7) dispersée dans un polymère, placée entre des polariseurs (8, 9, 10) dont au moins l'un est coloré (9, 10). En excitant le dispositif, une tension est appliquée à travers la cellule de cristaux liquides dispersée dans le polymère (PDLC), et cette cellule est commutée d'un état de diffusion à un état de non-diffusion, ou vice versa, et en disposant en conséquence le(s) polariseur(s) coloré(s), on peut régler la couleur de la lumière transmise. Ces dispositifs trouvent des applications appropriées comme interrupteurs à membrane.
