ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE An electroacoustic transducer is described, suitable for underwater operation. The transducer is of the folded-head type, having a head section and a tail section. The head section includes a folded portion which cooperates with the tail section to define a transducer cavity. This cavity is adapted to house electroacoustic driving means, preferably in the form of a series of rings of a piezo-electrically active ceramic. In a preferred embodiment the ceramic is a lead-zirconate-titanate piezoelectric ceramic. The electro- acoustic driving means is activatable to cause the transducer to generate an electroacoustic signal. The present transducer comprises an exterior end face on both the folded portion of the head section and of the tail section, which are in substantially the same plane. The folded portion and tail section are dimensioned to provide a positive gap therebetween. This gap precludes friction- al engagement between the folded portion and the tail section during energiza- tion of the electroacoustic driving means. Further, the coplanar end faces cause acoustical phase cancellation of the signal generated from such faces of the transducer, thereby enabling a signal transmitted from the transducer to be essentially uni-directional.
