A cell stack comprising a plurality of cells in parallel array, each cell having; an anode, a cathode, a separator frame, an electrolyte chamber, feed electrolyte cell conduit means in communication with the electrolyte chamber; spent electrolyte cell conduit means in communication with the electrolyte chamber; and the stack having; a terminal anode and a terminal cathode connected to a power source; spent electrolyte stack conduit means to receive spent electrolyte from each spent electrolyte cell conduit means to produce a cumulative spent electrolyte stream, cumulative feed electrolyte stack conduit means to provide feed electrolyte to each feed electrolyte cell conduit means, and the improvement wherein the stack comprises at least a first bank of cells and a second bank of cells without fluid communication between the first and second bank of cells within the stack, wherein each of the cells of the first bank has: first feed electrolyte cell conduit means in communication with a first electrolyte chamber; first spent electrolyte cell conduit means in communication with a first electrolyte chamber; first spent electrolyte stack conduit means to receive first spent electrolyte from each first spent electrolyte cell conduit means to produce a first cumulative spent electrolyte stream, first cumulative feed electrolyte stack conduit means to provide first feed electrolyte to each first feed electrolyte cell conduit means, wherein each of the cells of said second bank has: second feed electrolyte cell conduit means in communication with a second electrolyte chamber; second spent electrolyte cell conduit means in communication with a second electrolyte chamber; second spent electrolyte stack conduit means to receive second spent electrolyte from each second spent electrolyte cell conduit means to produce a second cumulative spent electrolyte stream, second cumulative feed electrolyte stack conduit means to provide second feed electrolyte to each second feed electrolyte cell conduit means, and wherein the stack has means for combining the first and second cumulative spent electrolyte streams. The cell stack operably provides reduced current losses due to bypass stray, shunt and parasitic reactions.
