Storage of hydrogen and electrical energy is achieved through the electrochemical hydrogenation of a fullerene. The hydrogenation is carried out in an electrochemical cell comprising a body of proton donor electrolyte (102) in effective contact with a negative electrode (103) and a positive electrode (104). The negative electrode (103) consists essentially of a fulleren in contact with a conductive material. By the application of an electric current across the electrodes, the cell is used to hydrogenate the fullerene. the hydrogenated fullerene so produced has utility as an electrode for batteries and hydrogen-air fuel cells.
