This invention pertains to a novel device for the electrochemical generation of gases for transportation of fluids and similar media. In particular, the invention relates to a galvanic cell comprising an anode, a cathode and a housing containing an aqueous electrolyte, in which, by closing an external circuit, a current flows which produces a quantity of gas corresponding to the current. The gas produced maybe used for transportation of fluid media. A cell is used which contains in the initial stage either a) electrochemical oxidizable substances, a hydrogen evolution electrode and a liquid electrolyte, or b) electrochemical reducible substances, an oxygen evolution electrode and a liquid electrolyte and which generates under flow of current initiated from outside hydrogen or oxygen, which is produced in the pores of a gas diffusion electrode and penetrates through the pores of a hydrophobic diffusion membrane into an external chamber. The electrolyte is retained in the cell housing by the high capillary depression of the membrane.
