The invention describes a new design of ionomer membrane fuel cell stack comprising a multiplicity of stainless steel bipolar plates, electrodes, membranes and perimetrical sealing gaskets enclosed between compression plates. The novel design is directed to prevent the build up of metal ions in the membranes and the consequent voltage decay; for this purpose, the lateral migration inside the ionomer membranes of the metal ions contained in the cooling fluid is prevented.

L'invention concerne un empilement de piles à combustible à membranes ionomères de conception nouvelle comprenant une multiplicité de plaques bipolaires en acier inoxydable, des électrodes, des membranes et des joints d'étanchéité périmétriques intercalés entre des plaques de compression. L'invention permet d'empêcher la formation de ions métalliques dans les membranes et, par conséquent, la chute de tension. Ceci consiste à empêcher la migration latérale à l'intérieur des membranes ionomères des ions métalliques contenus dans le liquide de refroidissement.
