Provided herein is an electrochemical lignin treatment method for depolymerizing lignin polymers or lignin-like polymers to monomeric or short chain oligomeric components. The lignin or lignin-like polymer is introduced in a chamber containing a cathode, current is applied to the cathode material so as to generate in-situ chemisorbed hydrogen and perform hydrogenolysis of said lignin or lignin-like polymer into monomeric or short chain oligomeric components. The method of the present invention may operate in batch or continuous flow trough arrangements. Preferably, the cathode material is a Raney-nickel cathode and most preferably a cathode as described in the detailed description of this invention.
