The invention disclosed relates to an electrochemical cell, and to a process for oxidation of a C2-C6 lower-alkane gas e.g. propane to a lower-alkane having the same number of carbon atoms using the electrochemical cell. The electrochemical cell including an anode chamber, a cathode chamber, a solid proton conducting membrane electrolyte, a catalytic anode in the anode chamber connected to one side of the solid electrolyte, and a catalytic cathode in the cathode chamber connected to the other side of the solid electrolyte, the process comprising: passing a gas containing a C2-C6 lower-alkane into the anode chamber to contact the catalytic anode, passing an oxygen containing gas into the cathode chamber to contact the cathode, such that in operation protons pass through the solid electrolyte from the anode chamber to the cathode chamber, forming a lower-alkane having the same number of carbon atoms as the lower- alkane is the anode chamber, and water in the cathode chamber
